So it was Adam's way of getting back to him. Gambo, he namechecks Al Green because it's a dig at Kevin Rowland of Dexy's who apparently criticized Adam or maybe said something that upset him (can't remember the details now) - it's a reference to one of Rowland's songs where he sang he "felt like Al Green". But it would've been interesting to see The Ants competing with the likes of Spandau or Duran He should've taken more time to develop - though now we know it was his illness that drove him. His problem, I think, was that he moved a bit too quick for his own good during his years at the top. But his hits are pure classics - and I must say I gravitate towards lesser-known ones like "Desperate But Not Serious" or "Apollo 9". His albums are generally hit-and-miss for me and as an album artist he's very uneven - for every overall good one ("Kings.", "Friend or Foe", "Vive le Rock") there's a failure of almost epic proportions ("Prince Charming", "Strip"). I once bought a picture disc of this song - and it indeed is credited to "Adam and the Ants"! Thought it was a mistake and I have myself a collector's item - but eventually knew the truth, of courseĪdam I find to be a great singles artist. Actually we'll see one of those songs in a couple of entries 1 somewhere - but there will be ones that, while international hits, did get to the pole position. The biggest UK star of 1981 now he was at the same time having his biggest worldwide hit - and starting a slide down from the top. Now let's visit an artists with carrier as long and illustrous as ABC, if not even more so. And, of course, there was a follow-up to "Lexicon" last year that returned them into the UK Top 5 - now that was the thing to surprise eveyone! They didn't even seem to like to sing songs about love, going political for a couple of next albums Still, an interesting carrier was made of it all, with lots of twists and turns. And the band didn't seem to expect it, too - and had a bit of a hard time trying to further their carrier after such a high. Still a bit unusual that it had such a widespread acclaim - kind of didn't expect it. First of all, let me second all the praise about the ABC debut - such a great record from start to finish that it just seemed destined to succeed.
